Stratford Festival – Theatre and dining in Ontario

My first visit to Stratford, Ontario and the Stratford festival was a memorable one. It’s a small town with a lot of charm and a variety of playbills or musicals to see.

We stayed for a couple of days to see the town and watch an evening musical, Carousel at the Avon Theatre. Strolling through the town is a leisurely pleasure on a nice summer day.

We stopped at Balzac’s Coffee Roasters for a iced coffee.

For lunch we decided to visit Boomer’s Gourmet Fries that had a wide selection of gourmet poutines and burgers. We tried the Poutine Martini (Crispy Fries & Onion Rings with White Cheese Curds & Gravy. Garnished with Olives.), Chili Fries (Fries with Shredded Cheddar, Chili & Sour Cream) and the A la Parisienne burger (With Brie, Grilled Onions & Dijon Mustard).  I enjoyed the Poutine Martini the most and the burger was juicy and pretty tasty too.

Boomer’s is a very small restaurant with limited communal type seating. You can even try their Hunka Hunka Burning Love burger (With Medium Cheddar & Jalapeno Habanero Chutney) which explains the Elvis Bust in the restaurant.

As a mid-afternoon snack we stopped for ice cream. Who can resist a chocolate dip swirl soft ice cream cone?

After a walk around the park we went to dinner before the show at Stratford Thai Cuisine. This little Thai restaurant was pretty good and service was friendly and fast.  We started with the calamari appetizer that was lightly battered and fried and came with Thai chilli sauce. The Snow Coconut Seafood Soup was also flavourful with a variety of thai herbs, mushrooms, onion and tomatoes.

The main course dish that we shared was the Ginger Chicken. I found it mediocre and because I’ve had better Thai dishes in Toronto I guess I was underwhelmed by this dish. I prefer sauces a bit thicker so that it almost glazes the chicken for a dish like this but, it had a good ginger flavour.
